Revised entries appear on Gothic Architecture (by Stephen Murray) and Gothic art (by Mary Shephard). There are new biographies, including those on Catherine of Siena, Johannes de Lignano, Otto II and Otto IV, and Rudolf of Habsburg. Increased attention is given to Islamic topics, including the Ottoman empire, bedouins, and the Kalila Wa-Dimna. Other topics include gnosticism, ghosts, genius, gynecology, violence, widowhood, and sexuality. Editor Jordan is at Princeton U. The volume is published under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies.
