This catalogue [is] a partial reconstruction of the Harmon Foundation's original exhibition mounted at the Smithsonian Institution in 1944. It reproduces all forty-one of the portraits given to the National Portrait Gallery when the Harmon Foundation dissolved in 1967. The "Special Exhibition of Portraits of Leading American Negro Citizens" was held May 2, through May 28, 1944.
